In conjunction with the 2025 Castle Mountain Resort (CMR) Ski Mountaineering Races (Jan. 10,11,12) SMCC is delivering a referee course. The course starts Thursday January 9th at noon (12:00 MST) with theory sessions and on mountain learning all weekend. The course finishes Sunday at 4:00PM. Accommodation will be provided free of charge to course participants.
Who’s it for?
Successful participants should have a zest for long hours and days supporting skimo athletes and volunteers. You’ll need skiing, terrain reading and ski touring skills as well as enjoying winter days outside. You’ll get to set up and inspect race courses (skin tracks, boot packs, transition zones, course markings/signage) in advance to ensure regulations and rules compliance. Then you’ll wear the referee hat for the Skimo races (Technical briefings, starting/finish timing, rules compliance, etc). Your physical fitness and skiing skills are of importance for referees. Referees ascend and descend the same technical ski mountaineering terrain the racers do.
In short, the SMCC referee course is for folks with the enthusiasm to help us grow the sport in Canada and internationally.
SMCC is providing the course and 3 nights accommodations free of charge.
Details on the condo on mountain at CMR to follow. Participants will be required to provide their own food. SMCC asks that participants be willing to commit to the sport as a referee for the long term (3-5+ years). We need more referees to be part of this wonderful sport as it grows in Canada!
The referee course is valid across North America, allowing new referees to work at races in Canada and the USA in both volunteer and paid roles. For those interested in referring internationally, further certification is provided through the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF)
